John is hungry

Garbage Island

I’m sure you’ve all heard reports of the huge island of plastic refuse the size of Texas floating in the middle of the Pacific. A film crew from VBS.tv hopped on a boat and went to go film it to find out how much is true and how much is merely hyperbole.

I just finished watching all of these and am feeling immensely saddened at how little there is we can do to fix the situation (and, of course, at just how bad it is).

I did go ahead and donate to the foundation that made the videos with VBS to help their research. You can do it here:

I’m sure I’ll also be cutting down on my plastic consumption and more responsible with my disposal.

It sucks that videos were wrought with words like “fuck” and, thus, can’t be shown to kids or grandmothers. Episodes 9-12, at least, should be viewable.

I think the profanity was the least of its problems when it come to being watchable, but sure, serious problem and all. I wonder if at some point oil becomes expensive enough to make collecting all the debris from the ocean for recycling economically sound.

Watch ep 9-12. It’s not possible to collect all the debris. They’re in tiny tiny particles and fragments.

they shouldn’t call it garbage island, they should call it “garbage floating in the ocean at random places” And I for one think we should throw more netting into the ocean. Did you see how much stuff that collected? I didn’t watch all 12 parts, the exposure was so poor I didn’t want my eyes to suffer through it.

What I meant was that the plastic in the ocean would be cheaper than making new stuff. And it would never happen anyway.

My initial thought was, “Wow! Think of all the adventures Heathcliff and the Cadillac Cats can get into on an oceanic garbage heap!” Then I was sad when I remembered I wasn’t in a cartoon and that the earth will soon implode.

I was reading in the paper today about this dwarf that got pickpocketed. How could anyone stoop so low?
