They’re all kids, John. Look at their profile pictures. They shop at Hot Topic. Of course they like it, but they really haven’t “found” themselves yet.

As for the band, they’re just capitalizing on that naivety.

THERE IS NO WAY YOU CAN BE AS OLD AS THOSE GUYS ARE AND TRULY MEAN TO DRESS THAT WAY. I maintain my position that no one can be that old and not see how completely ludicrous that style is, both aesthetically and musically.

Just listen to their cover of “Low” on their Myspace page; if you were in eighth grade at the time the original version of that song peaked, you might actually reinterpret it as these guys did for your eighth grade talent show. And moreover, your friends would have gone ape shit with delight.

That’s what these guys are… it just happens that all the people that like them are still in that eighth grade mentality.

I just did more research, the results of which I believe support my point. Many of (read: the two that I looked at OTHER than the one you linked) their videos on Youtube are just their songs playing over a slideshow of presumably-promotional stills. From these still one gets the sense that they are mocking the idea of promotional photos, and the “glamour” of the music industry and pop culture as a whole.

So too with their music? Perhaps they truly believe their music is the soundtrack to irony, that their contribution is not so much art, as an exposé on how easy it is to make club music, and how it does not take talent or creativity as such. Surely this would speak to that idea of cognizance we discussed, and how ultimately no self-aware people could really presume to be taken seriously looking and performing as these dummies do. Perhaps the same is supposedly true of their Hot Topic listeners?

Perhaps their “fans” rejoice in the mockery, and revel in the “new” sounds of a crunk-club-screamo ubergroup… because, you know, each genre individually is just too accessible or mainstream… or stupid. Perhaps all of the above.

But really, how can you really believe they are real with the following lyrics?

(from the song “Sex Toyz”)

I LOVE IT WHEN YOU TEASE ME! YOU MAKE IT SEEM SO EASY! WHEN YOU MAKE MY PEE PEE HARD! GIRL YOU MAKE MY PEE PEE HARD! DAMN RIGHT HOE YOU’RE SO SLEEZY! YOU GIVE ME THE HIBBY JIBBIES! WHEN YOU MAKE MY PEE PEE HARD! GIRL YOU MAKE MY PEE PEE HARD!

Dude, there’s no way they wrote that NOT for laughs.

Sammy, it’s the same kind of lyric that this band’s forebearers, Mindless Self Indulgence wrote. Sorry, man. This band is real and their fans are real.

It is funny when that guy repeatedly screams in the girls face. I often like to do that, maybe now I’ll be interpreted as “hip” and “cool” instead of “highly intoxicated” and “causing a disturbance”.
