Songs to shake the cold from your bones

By Steve has junk in the trunk about 1 month ago

Tuesday night when I was leaving work shortly before midnight I noticed was the first truly winterish night (in the city anyways).

I was listening to Joanna Newsom’s “Sawdust and Diamonds” on the way home and it fit the feeling of the night perfectly.

You guys have any favorite songs to listen to in the winter?

Corny response, but Matt Pond PA, Winter Songs, the whole thing.

That was one of the first things I thought of, too, Bill. Also, Bjork’s Vespertine. I love to put it on and watch the snow on the rare instances when it does so.

Obviously it’s only going on the second winter with it, but that’s what I love about the Bon Iver album. It just feels like a lonely, desolate winter.

Bobby McFerrin’s Don’t Worry Be Happy always makes me feel all warm inside.

I just went through Tom Waits’ Bone Machine in full for the first time and it was creepy and quiet with subtle sounds. It made me think of this post.

Normally, I like cozying up to Louis & Ella albums or just any jazz; something that feels smoky or fireplace-like.

Also, I’ll take albums that make me feel holed up and alone like Bon Iver For Emma, Forever Ago or The Microphones The Glow Pt. 2. These are like Bone Machine, quiet, subtle but strong.

“quiet” isn’t exactly the operative word I’d use for Bone Machine.

Well it sounded like Waits was harshly whispering to me about old stories that I shouldn’t know about.

Yeah, Waits is definitely good for winter. Sitting at a dive bar drinking some scotch on a cold winter night would be wonderful.

I think Radiohead’s Kid A is my quintessential winter album, probably in part because I vividly remember listening to it ALL winter after it came out in the fall of the year it did.

I feel the same way about a lot of Bjork’s stuff too. I listen to a lot of artists like Radiohead and Bjork who can make the cold machinery of synthetic instrumentation seem warm and organic.

I’ve never checked out Matt Pond actually, I’ll have to. What’s he like?
