And THAT is why Superman is the shittiest super hero on earth. What’s the point if he can just do anything? Like, at all? Ever?

I’ve always hated Superman. He’s a living deus ex machina. Did you see the latest movie? I hated that thing. Everything – every single last problem – in that movie is solved by lifting something.

That’s one of the bazillion great things about “The Dark Knight Returns”: Superman’s very awesomeness breeds contempt. He allows himself to be a tool of the Reaganesque government simply because it keeps people from turning on him and wanting to see him fail, but Batman knows it won’t last forever.

“Watchmen” also does a good number on that with Dr. Manhattan. Anyone with such a ridiculous degree of power is invariably going to lose touch with the people he’s intended to help. It’s not that he’s lost his empathy, he can’t bring himself to see individuals as anything other than quantum bits of datum in a much huger equation.
