Haha yeah sorry bout the length. It’s held at venues all over the city over a 4-5 day period.

How about ‘I wrestled a bear once?’

Bands I’d want to see:

  • A Place to Bury Strangers (MBV meets joy division. Incredibly loud and VERY good.)
  • Ambulance, Ltd. (good SF “freak folk”)
  • Broken Social Scene
  • Deerhoof
  • Fujiya & Miyagi (sort of like modern krautrock)
  • Lee Scratch Perry
  • Minus the Bear
  • sBACH (Spencer whatshisface from The Advantage and Hella gets bored of playing other people’s video-game music, writes his own)

Crystal Castles are very cool. And Juliana Hatfield, but only if she sings the spin the bottle song from the Reality Bites soundtrack.

didn’t we joke about “bear” themed names last year? “i wrestled a bear once” is a good one.

i suggest seeing bands you never heard of. i’m sure you’ve seen broken social scene and minus the bear before. or, seeing some new york bands. like miles benjamin. singer songwriter from brooklyn. i’m seeing him in philly on friday.

The Ruby Suns had a decent 2008 album.

Here is the Web site for the schedule of bands. I looked through Friday and Saturday’s lists and knew 3-5 bands. I looked at so many, I can’t even remember.

Steve, do you have any shows mapped out for the weekend? I’ll tag along with you. Maybe you heard about some “sleepers”?

Hahah I still haven’t looked through it all, but at this point on Friday I’m planning on just jaunting around the lower east side (pianos, living room, delancy, knitting room etc.) and hoping I come across something good. All those places have $10 or less door. The ruby suns, which you mentioned before, are playing at pianos I believe.

Saturday I was thinking about going up to the Blender Theater at Gramercy for Octopus Project and Yo Majesty. They both put on shows that should be seen.

Now that the schedules been released, I’m being bombarded by publicists telling me to go see their shit. Hopefully in the next few days I’ll sort through it and find some gems. I’ll pass it along.

But yeah, tag along! The best part about this is walking into the unknown. you see some terrible shit, like really fucking terrible, and its hilarious, but you always see something amazing too.
