Going to the movies

by yourself

you guys into it?

i’ve done it once … whenever “sicko” came out. it was a friday night at about 9 p.m. and there were only a few people there.

i’m leaving in about 15 minutes to venture on out for my second solo movie. i’m going to see “elegy” at the ritz. one of my favorite authors, philip roth, wrote the novel the book is based on “the dying animal,” so i’m dying to see it on the big screen.

I’m not a big fan of doing it, but I have done it a bunch of times. It has it’s pros and cons. The worst though is for comedies because you can only laugh when everyone else laughs or you look like a weirdo.

see, i’d never do a comedy. i cried during “sicko” but i was sitting off by myself. i’m sure i’ll cry during this movie. but i’m okay with it.

Definitely not for a comedy, but for most other types of movies it’s fine. It sucks to not have anyone to talk to immediately after, but it’s also good to not have to worry about giving anyone or anything else any attention while you’re there. I’ve been to movies (and plenty of other normal group activities) by myself, but usually only during the day. That Friday night thing makes you seem like an outcast.

Start banging Sammy openly (like on the internet) so you guys can do things together in public without having to worry about it.

I only went the movies by myself once: “Gremlins 2” at a dollar theater while my parents prepared for a holiday party. When I told my friend about this, he teased me about it for days and I was insecure for years about going to a movie by myself.

I was a sensitive kid.

But I’d do it now if I really wanted to see something and nobody wanted to go with me.

I never went to a movie by myself, although I am definitely not opposed to the idea.

However, I went to a Phillies game in LA by myself, and it felt like being thrown to the wolves. I was the only red shirt in a sea of blue shirts. I was booed as I left the stadium. :(

I’ve never been and don’t know that I’d enjoy it, but I might have to get used to it cause it’s very hard to get Gos to commit to such a long expenditure of time.

I haven’t done it in years, possibly even a full decade. But I used to do it all the time and loved it. But then again in my carefree single days I becamse a big fan of solo outings. Eating at restaurants by myself, movies by myself, travelling. I found/find it all ridiculously liberating, aside from it’s conduciveness to my anti-social personality in general. But most of the time I went to movies by myself I was either unemployed or working nights so I could go to movies in the middle of the day and be the only one there.

the truth is, i prefer going to this type of movie alone. if i’m going to go see “the dark knight” or a silly comedy, sure, let’s go as a group. but, i VERY rarely watch movies i’ve never seen before with other people. i get very, very emotional at movies and it’s something that someone else always ruins for me. i saw that dreadful kiera knightly movie last year and at a key part, where i started to tear up, my good friend i was with slapped my foot and pointed at the screen in an “can you believe this plot twist?” move. i never went to the movies with her again.

there is only one person i’d go to a movie with that might get me emotional and that’s my good friend aaron. even though he nearly ruined “no country for old men” for me by laughing at a certain scene. he had seen the movie before, so i’ll forgive him for that.

no offense sammy, and he knows this, but i won’t even go to an “emotional” movie. and if you’re curious, an emotional movie for me is anything that isn’t “tropic thunder” or “kung fu panda.”

I’ve never done this, but I could see myself doing so in the future. I found the IFC movie theater near MacDougal St. in Soho two weeks ago.

Since we’re talking about movies, I want to see Visioneers and Synecdoche, New York.

i’m with kevin. when i was in manchester, i pretty much did everything by myself, especially during the day. lunches, movies, walking around town. i have friends there, but it was so nice just to be able to do everything i wanted at my own pace. i haven’t done it so much around philly, but i think i should start.

and yep, the antisocial factor definitely comes into play there, as well.

Is Visioneers out yet, Paris?

A two-session premiere is scheduled in Woodstock, NY in early October. For right now, it just seems like the movie has been touring at different festivals.

Maybe the creators are trying to score some kind of deal? Or maybe they just can’t land a deal yet? I was expecting a NY/LA thing soon, but it just hasn’t happened yet.

Oo ooo. And the Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Maybe I’ll go see that alone. I’d definitely cry during that one.

just like to say that the movie was fantastic – beautiful. penelope cruz is a fantastic actress and has even moreso proven herself as far as i’m concerned after seeing “elegy” and “vicky cristina barcelona” a few weeks ago.

also, if anyone is looking for a new author to get into, try philip roth. he’s been writing a book a year for about 30 years now pretty much. best living american author. i said it!

wait… you slept in my bed?

I’ve definitely seen at least 2 star wars movies in the theatres by myself, probably others too. I love enjoying the movie experience by myself, especially when I want to be alone with my nerd- or sap-itude.

oh and penelope cruz is totally on my gay island. did you guys see volver?

i went to see a movie by myself once cause i didnt feel like waiting. i ended up not liking the movie.

i later on saw it with others and ended up liking the movie.

i attribute this to the idea that things are more fun when you have people to share them with.
