Unexpected road trip!
Bill & I are going to Charleston, WV next weekend to watch some of the qualifying rounds in this year’s World’s Strongest Man competition. (We’ll only be there on the 6th & 7th.)
I expect this to be hilarious and awesome. When Bill was younger, he was really into WSM and kept a website about it (caution: link to 1997). He went to a few WSM events in the US, and there are some funny pictures of him as a teenager hanging out with dudes seven times his size.
Following that, we’re leaving on the 13th to spend a week in northern Europe. We’re headed to Hamburg, Copenhagen, and Malmo. Three countries in nine days, eek. Hopefully some of the friendly Scandinavian strongmen will have some travel advice!
So Scrabbleds, what fun is on your horizon?

I can’t believe that I think I know this, but is that Magnus ver Magnusson in that picture?
Also, I love the inclusion of a man purse while being team hugged by two of the World’s Strongest Men.
As for my fun, today I can cross another baseball stadium off my list: Yankee Stadium! My friend and I are taking a train up in a couple hours. The game’s at 1 PM. This will be my 14th active stadium (not counting 2 that are no longer used in baseball, the Vet and Olympic Stadium in Montreal). Almost halfway to seeing them all!
Ha! These WSM things actually happen eh? I always just kind of thought they showed up on ESPN 2 from whatever alternate universe they occur in regularly. Please take notes and be prepared to return with a detailed report on the characters you come across in the crowd.
You should try to catch a hockey game in Sweden if you’re into that kind of thing. The Malmo Redhawks have developed quite a few NHL players in their system.
As for fun on my horizon, I just got finished booking a beer research tour through the low countries. We’re flying into Frankfurt and then taking trains to Dusseldorf, Amsterdam, Antwerpen, Ghent, Brugge and Brussels. We’re also planning a day trip to Westvleteren in search of arguably the best beer in the world. I am incredibly excited.
