John is feeling sooty

Beck - Modern Guilt

By John is feeling sooty 2 months ago

So the 8th saw another new album from Beck, this time enlisting the help of white people’s favorite DJ, Danger Mouse (of the Grey Album, Gorillaz, Gnarls Barkley, misc. other projects that start with G). I wasn’t expecting too much after his previous two somewhat middling attempts, but I have to say, after my first full listen, I’m really surprised by how much I like it. It starts off like his last two, sort of “this is good, but I don’t know that I’ll want to listen to it much.” But by the end, it really takes on its own character and I was completely absorbed—enough so that I had to immediately start it over again when it was done.

Definitely worth checking out.

Yeah, I haven’t given this one as much of a listen as it deserves yet, but I was definitely happy with it the first two or three times through. It’s got that sort of unique and clearly defined identity I’ve been missing in his last few albums.

The fact that a believer is happier than a skeptic is no more to the point than the fact that a drunken man is happier than a sober one. The happiness of credulity is a cheap and dangerous quality.
