That was linked at Stereogum and many of the commentators indicated it was some sort of shtick or bit they were doing. I’m not sure I believe that, but still….
Also, there are very few advantages and/or things that are great about being old. One of them is that I was old enough when Nu Metal/Rap Rock hit to know better and realize that those bands were the hair metal of their day and not to get suckered in.

Not to rain on your old parade, but you didn’t have to be old to figure that out, oldy von oldenberger.
Kevin said:I don’t know, I’d venture to guess that most people under 30 at least owned one cd by a “rock” band with either a rapper and/or a dj. If they didn’t then more power to ‘em but I’d like for everyone to lay it on the table right now to see where we all stand on this.
balls on you, that one incubus record is really really good
Jay said:Fuck. Now that I think about it, you’re actually right Kevin. My pop-punk band at the time (1998 or so) actually had a song called “Notorious K.I.D” and we covered “Jump Around” at shows. Fuck. That’s so much worse than owning a cd.
Yeah, but we were all having fun back then. You weren’t doing it for a living.

I still listen to the Deftones from time to time, and Incubus was pretty decent during their day. What do they do now? are they still a band?
What was the third Korn album? I think the one with Freak on a Leash was the most recent I got. That was the third, wasn’t it?
As for Incubus, I think they just released a new single or something. I lost interest with Morning View cause it was terrible.
i read the incubus wiki page out of curiosity, and discovered brandon boyd is way younger than i expected, and that they are not touring currently because of school/family/recording and shit.
also i’ve been wearing the incubus shirt i bought at ozzfest in 98 around the house when i am cold. i left it on the floor. alfie slept in it like it was her job.
I just like this thread because I remember one of the first conversations I had with John outside of the context of family dinners at our in-laws was an IM conversation that involved him telling me he went to see Deftones and Incubus. I responded that I didn’t really like Nu Metal and him getting riled up and using a good deal of exclamation points and caps explaining to me why neither band were Nu Metal.
Oh how, little Johnny has grown up.

But.. those bands ARE good! Hell, Deftones has way more in common with all the music you got me into than the other nu-metal bands.
While those bands may in fact be better than say Limp Bizkit and Powerman 5000 or Slipknot or their ilk, they are still Nu-Metal. I don’t make the rules, I just enforce them, and the rule is full rock band with rapper and/or dj equals Nu Metal. I’d like to be able to make exceptions but that starts a slippery slope process that none of us want to go down.

The Deftones do have a DJ, Frank Delgado. I had this same argument on another message board, and when some dude responded with a “The Deftones do NOT have a DJ” I posted a picture of the cover of DJ Times with this dude on it. That ruled. Unfortunately I can’t find the picture now. And don’t try to sell me on the whole “Well, he also plays keyboards and samplers, etc.” That’s just about as lame as Linkin Park throwing a guitar on their rapper dude, asking him to pretend to play it and pretending they’re not Nu Metal and he’s not a rapper.

oh yeah.Ii forgot about him. Because he’s a keyboardist. He plays keyboards. I can’t think of a single Deftones song with scratching.

Yeah, that’s the third one. Freak on a Leash and Got the Life were on it. Korn was the self titled, then Life is Peachy, and then the third one was um.. Follow the Leader, I think it’s called?
Yeah, he’s a keyboardist. And this guy is Jimi Hendrix.

It’s o.k., brother. I’m there for you during these last few strands of denial. In another year or so ironic Nu Metal nostalgia will be acceptable (I’m calling this Fred Durst video and it’s omniscient web presense on hipster blogs as being the opening shot fired in this wave). Then everyone can wave their red baseball caps, suede Adidas sneakers, and Deftones albums in the air like they just don’t care.
