The Venture Bros. T-Shirt Club

The third season of The Venture Bros. kicked off last night.

Their summer season is supplemented by a weekly, episode-specific t-shirt club. They look pretty expensive, but I’m offering up the link to anyone who grasps for new, higher levels of ultimate nerdery.

This is one of the best shows on TV. I lost interest in the empty and distant irony of the Adult Swim line-up several years ago, but can easily recommend this one to anybody. Yes, it’s weirdly nerdy, heavily referential, and often silly… but almost exists as the Anti-Adult Swim. The creators strive to give the character nuance and let the humor spring from their very fragile dignity. Plus, crude sex jokes.

There’s a lot of continuity, however, which makes it pretty imposing for a new viewer.

My favorite one-off jokes are the string of silly hero and villain names that get tossed out. Last night’s best: Bettie Rage, Joseph and His Amazing Technicolor Nightmare Coat.

Shit! I forgot to DVR! And I totally agree: this is the best show on television and completely saves the Adult Swim lineup from it’s almost complete nonsense. Well, Venture Bros. and Metallacolypse. But I feel like maybe that’s only funny to people really into metal. And children.

I actually just started watching Venture Bros last month, and I’m almost done the second season. It takes a few episodes to “get it” but then once you do, it’s AWESOME.

I think my favorite is Hank. And Dr. Orpheus.

Dr. Orpheus’ bizarre, naive sweetness cracks me up. But I think Monarch and Dr. Venture are the best characters on the show… petty, frustrated failures that are completely unable to let things go.

And I dig the endless, endless David Bowie references.
