Bookshelf

I’ve been listening to oldies, drinking Heineken, and operating a table saw all afternoon/evening. I made a goddamn bookshelf and I feel great. More to come… I’m going to go admire it and then put on a layer of primer (I decided to paint instead of stain).

When the last time you hammered while hammered?

The frame of my bed collapsed a while back so I went to home depot and bought a plank of wood and a handsaw, drank beer and fashioned a new center support for it.

There’s nothing quite like that moment when you’ve finished, you stand there looking at your work of awesomeness and take a swig. It should (and probably has) be made into a beer commercial.

I really want to build a counter/shelf for our kitchen. We have all sorts new kitchen gadgets and nowhere to put them. An extensive search of local furniture and department stores have tunred up nothing suitable. So building one seems the only option.

Home depot can cut pieces of board to length for you, right? I’m rather lacking in tools.

It can. The hardest part then is getting it home.

I just inherited a power drill, and got some drill bits for it. I have a belt sander, too, but it might electrocute us… we’ll need tape for the cord. Let’s be men!

I’ve never been drunk when building something, but most of the time what I build ends up looking like I was.

And yes, John Home Depot will cut board to size for you but it’s a pain finding someone and getting them to do it right. But if you don’t have tools it’s still your best option.

I hammered something together a couple weeks ago, but I long ago resolved to never build furniture while drunk. I’ve got this old bookshelf in my bedroom that’s all slanty and kinda misshapen as a result.

I’m putting on the 2nd coat of paint tonight, and it will be ready for photos/books by tomorrow.

Yes, Home Depot makes cuts for you.

2×4s, 1×6s, and all those other wood sizes are not exactly what they say they are. For example, a 1×12 piece of wood is actually 3/4" thick and 11 1/4" wide. So once I drew up a diagram for the bookshelf, I had to visit Home Depot in order to label the measurements correctly.

All those board sizes come in 4’, 6’, 8’, 10’ and 12’ lengths. I made my bookshelf to be 4’ high, and the shelves 3’ wide. So I bought the 6’ and 8’ pieces and them cut directly in half at the store.

Tell me more! how’d you get everything together? Nails or screws straight in? Metal joints? Any clue? Adjustable or fixed shelves?

I’ll show you the diagrams I drew up, because trying to describe it perfectly would probably get confusing, but I’ll try without all the numbers.

I started with the sides. I nailed strips to make upside-down Ls under where each shelf would be. The shelves then squeezed into their respective spaces nicely and I propped the entire thing on each side and nailed the sides to the shelves.

I used finishing nails for everything except securing the plywood back panel to the sides and shelves. I used screws in pre-drilled holes.

I made it with four shelves (and a 5th “shelf” at the very top). I had the shelf heights pre-determined and decided to not care at the moment about how much space was left at the bottom. It turned out to be 4 1/4" at the base, which was a perfect size for some base-molding that I picked out at Home Depot.
