I still don't like Animal Collective.
Yes, I “get” them. I don’t like them.
Maybe it would be good if they left out the crappy folk music part, but that seems to be most of it. It’s all part of the conspiracy to make pseudo-folk music seem cool somehow. It’s not. But whatever.
The Nirvana covers have made me physically ill.

I’ve totally come around on Animal Collective. John can attest to how much I disliked them. But something on the last album just clicked, as did listening to the Panda Bear record. I can’t say I totally love them now or that some of it still isn’t unlistenable garbage but I can at least appreciate the whole approach to it. Although I agree that the neo-folky parts are definitely the most annoying thing about them.
Their music is okay, but I don’t think it manages to surmount its gimmick most of the time. When it does, it’s enjoyable.
But they give themselves stupid fake names. If I met them in person and was actually a person capable of violence, I’d have to resist the urge to pound them over and over and over and over in the face until there was nothing left above their necks but strawberry jam.

That about sums it up perfectly. Although before last year I probably would have limited it to the second paragraph with no caveats. Now I can at least agree with the first paragraph as well.
They don’t seem very different to me. I kinda like Panda Bear. They seem like a neo-Grateful Dead to me tho. It’s on the same level, it has it’s moments but there’s something about it I can’t stand.
Altho anyone who like that stuff should be listening to Scott Williams’ show on FMU. He picks out the good stuff and mixes it with other stuff so it works. Comus and the Wicker Man soundtrack are staples on there, too. He plays a lot of stuff I would never listen to a whole album of.
