Martha Stewart's dog dies, CNN has a link on the front page.

listen, i’m sick and tired of people choosing random stories to get all huffy about. people die in iraq every single day. it’s always on CNN. it should be a huge story. but, every single day, it’s not going to be number one.
martha stewart’s dog died. who the fuck cares. just scroll down and read about iraq. i guarantee tomorrow you won’t read and see how many people died in iraq. but you will get all mad if something you deem “stupid” is above it.
i’m sorry, this is directed at EVERYONE.
and another thing!
that link is on there cos it’s entertainment news. for people who like martha stewart, they know her fucking dog. i don’t, you don’t, but people do. some care and you know what? if cnn gets more hits from that story than any other one, they will continue to thrive on advertisers dollars. it’s about the bottom line. not about the news.
Whether it’s the news people deciding what is a top story or “the readers/viewers/etc.” it’s still pathetic. The fucking dog of a celebrity gets a full article, while unless the soldier dying is some sort of milestone (500, 1,000, 2,000, etc.) there is no article about him. So yeah, whether it’s “what the people want” or what the people are given its a sad fucking state of affairs that likely more people know the name and details of the life of some celebrities dog than they do about the soldier who died in Iraq today, or the guy who got shot on the street of New York, or whoever it was. Just because that’s the way news works doesn’t mean it’s any less pathetic or that it sucks one iota less not matter what the newsie rationalization for it is.

yes i agree with that. but i feel it’s not worth getting worked up over. there are SO many news outlets and you just have to find the one you like and trust.
John said:And christina, your defenses fall flat. The article is retarded and its publishing is inexcusable.
but why is it retarded? because YOU don’t like it? i don’t agree with it, i just understand it. it’s definitely NOT inexcusable because news is what the outlet thinks it is, not what’s best for the country. we can argue it as a whole, not individual articles i think.
Yeah, but it goes much deeper than “find a news outlet you can trust”. I can do that. I have the luxury of time and access to computers that a lot of people don’t have. So when what is perceived as the premier news outlet for most average americans reports their news in that manner of “give the people what they want” rather than “This is news that you should know about” then the news business is totally complicit in this. There is absolutely no such thing as news or journalism any more. There are companies that regurgitate press releases and simply repeat what they are told by spokespeople, or there are feel good entertainment stories. Actual journalism and the reporting of actual news counts for maybe 10% tops of what is out there. The rest at this point has become this sick hybrid between court stenographers and Entertainment Tonight style reporting.
kev, i will not disagree with you there. listen, i left my job because of that bullshit. steve can attest to it too. shit, i only worked for COMMUNITY newspapers and they told us what to print. again, it’s about the bottom line. i’m glad you, and most people on this site, are smart enough to know that.
i mean, there is still journalism – in my eyes – because there are certain publications and authors that i follow. but no one is gonna read a story and talk about how good the reporting or writing is. they are gonna gonna go “omg. the gov. of ny fucked some hooker.” such is life…
christina said:John said:It’s fluff. It’s worthless. It is of no value to anyone
it’s definitely fluff. but it has value to some people. i mean, it has to. not me. not you. but someone.
Even if that’s true, and I’m inclined to admit that it is, “news” outlets aren’t the place for it. I’ll even concede that it’s fine on shows like Good Morning America or Today that blend news and feel good, distracting entertainment pieces. But it only becomes “news” because “news” outlets present it as such.
