The DJ is still there, but it’s 10 years later. Good bands evolve and change with the times. If they got back up there with breakbeats and record scratches, it’d be a throwback; it’d be worthless semi-retro bullshit. Portishead is too good for that.
While I really like the new Portishead stuff, I also would have liked to see some more on the DJ/percussion end of things.
Portishead wouldn’t know a breakbeat if it smacked them in the face, maybe THAT should be the next step for them. Beth Gibbons crooning over some rugged Bambaataa shit and maybe a cameo by Flava Flav. Genius in the making.
Actually, by it’s very definition it does. I think you meant to say “a band changing does not mean they have made progress.”
And I would absolutely say that this new album is an evolution for the band. If it sounded like the last two albums, it would have sucked, no one would have cared, and the album wouldn’t have mattered.
