Fires...
It is one of those manythings where I thought… “it will never happen to me… it just can’t happen”.
Low and behold, I wake up with sirens surrounding my apartment, fire alarms going off. I had slept through 10 minutes of my apartment complex being on fire. I am a heavy sleeper, but holy shit. REALLY?! It is a two story building, and I am on the ground. The fire started two doors down, (roughly 65 feet away). When I woke up and went outside, the firefighters were already putting out the fire. Two minutes later it spread to all the top level apartments, including the one over mine.
They did put the fire out in about 45 minutes, but they wouldn’t tell me anything about mine. So I just went to work. I love my stuff in that apartment, but it wouldn’t be the end of the world if I lost it all. I am just wondering if I would be here right now if the wind was blowing the other way. I really need to not sleep so deeply.
When I did walk outside, I was kind of confused, and thought maybethere was a minor fire or something. Then one of my neighbors says “Wow, I thought you were not home, I would have knocked”.
Gee… thanks?
Anyway, I am going back there in a few to check out the damage. My new 52 inch LCD HDTV… all my hockey equipment. My computers… my hockey jerseys :(

your renter’s insurance should cover any loss you may have. hopefully your leasing office/your brain forced you to get it before you moved in. getting rid of smoke damage (smells, stains, etc.) should also be covered. hope it all works out, though!
i would have grabbed my rabbit and kev would have grabbed his johnny walker blue.
hey john – please knock on my door if that happens, okay? thanks.

A three-alarm fire in a San Rafael condominium complex Monday morning injured one woman and left about 10 people without shelter, authorities said.
Firefighters summoned at 7:11 a.m. to 9 Village Circle, just off San Pablo Avenue near the Marin Civic Center, found flames shooting from a building that houses eight units, San Rafael fire Division Chief Keith Schoenthal said.
Firefighters from San Rafael, Novato and Kentfield used eight engines, three trucks and two medic units to battle the blaze, which was under control by 8:20 a.m.
The cause of the fire and extent of the damage was under investigation, fire officials said. They said at least five units were damaged and officials estimated the blaze caused $150,00 in damage to the structure and $250,000 in damage to the contents.
Homeowner Cathryn Watson, 54, a county employee who is on medical leave from the probation department, said she awoke to find fire everywhere.
“I had no idea what happened,” said Watson, who suffered a burn on her leg, as she sat wrapped in blankets on the curb with her cat, Molly, waiting for the Red Cross.
“I was out like a light,” she said. She said she woke up to find “the entire bed surrounded by flames.”
“I went towards the hallway, stopped and went back in to get my purse but it was too fast,” Watson said. “And the smell, oh my god, toxic, just toxic.”
I am in a hotel for the next 7 days. My apartment wasn’t completely fucked, but I can’t live there for a few months they said. I am calling bullshit on that. However, I don’t know if I want to live there anyway, with all the construction that will be going on.
I am still breathing really heavily from the smoke. I woke up 10 minutes after it started, and the firefighters were already working on the fire. My fire alarms didn’t wake me up. If wind was blowing the other way… then I truly would be Bannedthony.
