Meadowlands Xanadu
I just heard about this tonight. It’s a nearly-finished “mall” in North Jersey (near the Meadowlands). I use the term “mall” loosely because it sounds ridiculous.
It’s supposed to have been done in 2007. But now, as soon as late 2008. It will be the third largest shopping mall in the world.
Some features:
- indoor ski resort
- indoor surfing pool
- skydiving simulation wind tunnel
- House of Blues
- outdoor equipment store with a rock-climbing mountain with working waterfall
- role-playing amusement park
- ferris wheel

I pass the thing all the time. I can’t imagine an indoor ski slope being anything but lame.
I pass this on my way to work every day. Seeing the ski slope stage by stage construction has been pretty cool, but this whole thing reeks of monumental disaster to me. Apparently they’re building a bunch of luxury condoes and stuff on the site too. They’re trying to make a community that has everything so you never have to leave, but I just can’t see people getting into it. I’m not sure how devastating a failure like this would be to the local economy, but I’m kinda rooting for one because I can’t deal with more traffic up here.
They actually named it Xanadu? I can’t wait to hear trashy mall people try to pronounce that one.
Me, I’ll just assume that the end result of the construction will be a garish, nightmare-scape populated by a rollerskating Olivia Newton John and that guy from The Warriors.

i remember when this shit was proposed (and i don’t even live in assy north jersey). it sounds like HELL and further cements my desire to stay far far away from any sort of rutherfords.
