George Harrison's Plagiarism

An article from John is hungry posted on Mar 27, 2008

Don’t know how common knowledge this is, but George Harrison was once sued for <a href=“http://www.mcsweeneys.com>plagiarism and lost! Benedict.com has ”http://www.benedict.com/Audio/Harrison/Harrison.aspx">the details and a side-by-side comparison. What do you think? Apparently later the court admitted that Harrison could have subconsciously plagiarized the song, but the Chiffons were still awarded the settlement.

I heard about that!! George didn’t seem like the kind of guy to lie about something like that, I believe him. Although it’s not like he couldn’t spare the money, so whatevs.

The link is broken but if this is about My Sweet Lord sounding like He’s So Fine, I don’t see how anyone could deny that. And it’s not like He’s So Fine is some kind of obscure tune that he may or may not have heard.

True, true. Although “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” has that Da na na na na na stop Da na na na na na stop Da na na na na na na na na na thing that’s in a ton of songs, like “Babe I’m Gonna Leave You” by Zeppelin and “25 or 6 to 4” by Chicago.

I think it’s funny that George got sued for ripping of someone else’s song when SO many bands blatantly rip off the Beatles all the time.

So who knew that George Harrison’s actual first solo album was released in 1968 and was a mostly instrumental album of mostly indian music? I didn’t! But I grabbed it and put it where you can all grab it if you’re interested in hearing it.

I recall Bob Dylan’s “4th Time Around” and The Beatles “Norwegian Wood” sounding similiar too.
