i dont understand why being from a certain place makes me a certain way and i have to disguise who i am. in that case all germans are nazi, all french are cowards, and all irish are alcoholics.
you are who you are. you can go to italy and be yourself, and who knows, that might turn out to work really well. or you can go to italy and be an obnoxious american pretending to be italian, which would probably be more insulting to everyone involved anyway.
now if you meant that you could avoid being obnoxious by learning their language, showing that you care about their culture and dont demand that they speak in your language and learn to deal with your customs in their country, then i could almost agree with your statement, (thats more then some people who live here bother doing) but id sooner say it keeps you from being an obnoxious tourist, not specifically american.
and thats all not to really say that you particularly are obnoxious, its just that that kind of talk really gets my goat.
