New NIN
So a new NIN album came out today! It’s following in the footsteps of the last Radiohead release.
Trent Reznor explains, “I’ve been considering and wanting to make this kind of record for years, but by its very nature it wouldn’t have made sense until this point. This collection of music is the result of working from a very visual perspective – dressing imagined locations and scenarios with sound and texture; a soundtrack for daydreams. I’m very pleased with the result and the ability to present it directly to you without interference. I hope you enjoy the first four volumes of Ghosts.”

Trent Reznor said: “I’ve been considering and wanting to make this kind of record for years, but by its very nature it wouldn’t have made sense until this point."
Why wouldn’t it have made sense? are the songs about things that happened in the news recently?
John which deluxe are you getting sucked into buying? there are two
The $75 one.
I think it wouldn’t have made sense, Kev, economically, because of his contract to record companies. After his last album, he owed the record company one more album, but he made a bunch of statements in the press and at shows that the record company didn’t like and they freed him from his contract. I’m assuming there was no way a big label would have put out a four disc instrumental collection, or that if he’d made it on their dime, they’d’ve shelved it before spending the money to print it.
Now he’s releasing albums digitally online and he can do whatever the fuck he wants.
Now that we’re no longer constrained by a record label, we’ve decided to personally upload Ghosts I, the first of the four volumes, to various torrent sites, because we believe BitTorrent is a revolutionary digital distribution method, and we believe in finding ways to utilize new technologies instead of fighting them. We encourage you to share the music of Ghosts I with your friends, post it on your website, play it on your podcast, use it for video projects, etc. It’s licensed for all non-commercial use under Creative Commons.
How incredibly cool is that?!
i only enjoyed half of with teeth and non of whatever the last one was, but i do like me some good instrumental music on occassion. actually his instrumentals off the fragile are some of my favorite songs of his.
i might pick this up. i want to check out the blu ray disc, but $75 is way to much for a cd dvd set. if it was somewhere around $40 i wouldve been ok with it.
and the music is free for all non commercial use? like i could use these albums to score zombieszombies! ?
i have gotten it…. somehow….. but i intend on buying the cd version should my ears deem it good.
the site mentions that he will be making more volumes, and also says something about an interesting partnership of the music with something else.
maybe he is referring to zombies! zombies! zombies!
if anyone needs me, ill be waiting by the phone.
So is anyone else sort of in shock over how good this is? I mean, I’d all but written NIN off after the last two albums. And I really wanted to like them. NIN are one of those bands I have an emotional investment in. I want them to win. But lately, it’s felt like rooting for a Phillies.
But the year zero remixed was pretty good and then this… Way to make the playoffs, Trent!
like i think i mentioned before, i was never a Nine Inch Nails fan. heard them through friends, owned an album or two, but never really followed them.
this album is awesome. however, i LOVE ambient stuff, so maybe that’s why i’m so swayed. i think i’m also very attracted to how he released it and left it open for anyone to do just about anything with it. that’s huge.
i just wish some of the tracks lasted a little longer – my only gripe. wanting more is a good gripe, though.
