Lost: Season 4 Episode 5
This is hands down the best episode to date. In fact, Lost hasn’t made me cry until tonight.
It’s even better than when the hatch gets opened, or when we learn that The Others were just wearing costumes.
I’ve been jones-ing for a Desmond-centric episode for a long time now. They’re always the most mind-blowing.
I was very surprised to see the bad guy from Hackers show up. Too bad he didn’t last! So he got his radiation/electromagnetism dose from taking the chopper out because of boredom? Before he died he mentioned, “when the captain finds out”. Why doesn’t the captain already know that the communications are down? Zero Cool’s nemesis’ last words were, “I can’t get back.” Did he mean back to 2004 and his mind was in 1996? Or was he in 2004 panicking because he couldn’t get back to 1996 (Or whatever year applies to him)?
So there seems to be no physical time-traveling happening. It’s the person’s brain or conscience that jumps. Interesting. Now Desmond got highly exposed on the island, so he’s got it real bad. What about the other Losties? Did they receive a mild helping during the blast?
I noticed that they two waiting at the freighter didn’t know their location. They mentioned a dock in Fiji though.
1996 Faraday must build a new rat maze every morning. Insane!
Can we assume the communications sabotage-er is the same person who opened the sick bay’s door, who in turn is Ben’s spy?
The Blackrock reappears! And the journal (which just HAS to come up again) is the only thing that remains (or so most of the world thinks). It was found in Madagascar. Was that where the polar bear was?
So Desmond’s nose started bleeding, but then he contacted his “constant” so I guess he’ll survive. Is that how it works? Faraday’s “constant” is Desmond. Is just thinking that for years enough to make it certain?
Now that some of the science has been explained, how can we apply this to the other Losties? or anyone else on the show? Does every Losty have a “constant”? If so, are their “constants” always people?
Will the Oceanic 6 expose themselves to radiation? And some how consciously time travel back to the island to tell themselves not to leave? Is that even possible?

I don’t think so at all. That would be a retarded way to go about getting a fingerprint. He’s just some rich mother fucker who thinks he’s better than germy sinks.
Anyone think Ben was the one on the phone bidding for the manifest?
Absolutely it’s a crazy way of getting fingerprints. However, I’m cheating a bit and considering the filmmaker. They made a very concerted effort to make it obvious to the viewer that he didn’t want to smudge up the drain handle and that he left the water on. Leaving the water on was very “omg he left the water on!” I’m betting 9/10’s of the viewers can’t really say what was happening as he walked out because they were focusing on the fact that he left the water on.
If it was germs, he could have used the towel to shut it off. No, he wanted Desmond to shut the water off and the director wanted us to know that. Fingerprints is the most commonplace answer as to why without jumping into crazy theories.
Unless you think fingerprints is a crazy theory, which I do. There are so many easier ways to get fingerprints then to count on Desmond turning off the water. Why didn’t Widmore go back to lift the prints? Does he even have the ability to lift prints? Is he counting on no one else using the bathroom while he’s getting the prints? Is there no bar nearby where he could talk to Desmond over a drink? All he’d have to do is take the glass.
True true true, Bill. I think I just want him leaving the water on to be more than just a really stupid way to show how much time has passed. Cause if that’s it’s only purpose, it’s really stupid.
Also, does anyone else feel like the whole “constant” thing is a complete mcguffin? Like, annoyingly so?
I think you’re misinterpreting what it is. The first sentence in the wiki article says it best:
“a plot device that motivates the characters or advances the story, but the details of which are of little or no importance otherwise.”
Essentially, it something that reeks of writer’s laziness; something they needed to insert into the story to hold a tenuous connection or further a plot, but really isn’t explored and is jsut sort of… dropped in there with no detail or explanation.
