To B-52s Or Not To B-52s, That Is The Question

Does anyone here like the B-52s? And I mean, really really like the B-52s. I mean, are you a gigantic fan?

The B-52s make fun music. It’s one-of-a-kind in my mind. But I never think about them beyond “Love Shack” and “Rock Lobster”. Why is that?

I just gave their new single Hot Corner a listen. I enjoyed it. That’s what got me thinking about all this.

If you are a huge fan, what do you suggest?

jon, i was gonna talk to you about the b-52s. good music has come outta athens and these guys are no exception. i think, in the same realm as the beach boys, they might leave a bad taste in people’s mouths because of such hits as “love shack.” but the truth is, they’re a good post-punk, new wave band that is smart and fun.

and what i mean by the beach boys comment is that a lot of people, not you guys, but a lot of people just think of their surfer fun sing-a-long hits. they don’t know much else by way of pet sounds, say.

Their first album is a classic in the best sense of the word, and even more so when you consider they were doing this in Georgia, in the 70’s. The album with Love Shack, Roam, etc. is a guilty pleasure that I can enjoy but not up there with the first album. I guess that doesn’t answer your question but I can say that I love (really love) their first album. But as a whole I merely like them o.k.

I love them, but I haven’t heard their new single yet. They’re the most fun band I’ve ever heard, in the sense that I get smile pains when listening to them.

The “Cosmic Thing” album (the one with Roam, etc.) has one of the best opening lines of any album:

“Girate ‘til you’ve had your fill. Just like a pneumatic drill.”

It doesn’t really have the same impact written down. You need to hear it. I wish there was a Fred Schneider emoticon. That might help.

I’m not a very big B-52s fan, but I was told by the engineer who was recording my high school band’s album that my singing voice is very Fred Schneider. I was pretty sure he was trying to put me down.

Can anyone upload the Self-Titled and Cosmic Thing albums to you-know-where, please?
